What exactly is proofreading, and how is it different from revising or editing?

Proofreading covers a concept that is bigger than revision. While revision is the comparison of two texts (the original and the translation) to ensure that the translation is correct and does not contain spelling, grammar, typographic or other errors, proofreading has a wider analysis; it's also known as critical revision and is carried out by another translator.

The final phase a translator carries out before delivering a project to the client is to ensure that the text—besides being free of spelling and grammar errors—is fully cohesive, has the right style, and, most importantly, is clear and reads smoothly.

There are different kinds of proofreading: bilingual, monolingual, text or print.

More specific correction is carried out during the proofreading process. For example, the translator makes sure that the tone of the translation is perfectly adjusted to what the client wants. At the same time, they identify any issues related to the cultural or linguistic context the translation is meant for, as well as the overall design. It also includes an editing process.
